Album Spotlight, Gareth Farr: Ruaumoko

Thursday, June 30, 2011

Gareth Farr: Ruaumoko (MMT2042) is a collection of works for symphony orchestra by celebrated New Zealander, Gareth Farr. Farr's music is by turns dynamic, lyrical, percussive and rhythmic, but above all, it is some of the most exciting and approachable contemporary msuic you're likely to hear. This recording features the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Young and soloist Conal Coad (bass) performing exclusive recordings of Farr's Ruaumoko, Orakau, Rangitoto and the thoroughly exciting Beowulf.

Ruaumoko, also subtitled 'South Pacific Seasons', tells the story of Ruaumoko, god of earthquakes. Of the work, Farr writes: 'Ruaumoko, god of earthquakes, was teh youngest son of Papatuanuku, the Earth. When Papa and Rangi (his father, the sky) were separated, he remained unborn in Papa's womb. From his subterranean dwelling he would shake the body of his mother, and in doing so cause the seasons to change. Together with Hinewera, teh goddess of fire, he celebrates the birth of the new with the destruction of teh old.'

The featured soloists on this recording have continued to make major appearances on the concert stage. Coad has settled in Belgium where he regularly performs with the Opéra de Wallonie and the Royal Flemish Opera, as well as making frequent appearances in France and Isreal. Greager, who has been Principal Tenor at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Scottish Opera and Hanover State Opera, will be performing the role of Mime in Auckland Philharmonia's production of Wagner's Das Rheingold in concert. Mere Boynton is well known for her role as Mavis in the internationally acclaimed movie Once were Warriors and she recently toured New Zealand in the dance opera Jerusalem by Mmichael Parmenter. Soprano Deborah Wai Kapohe recently performed at the Beijing Olympics with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra as part of the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs Cultural Diplomacy International Programme.
