Lloyd Morrison passes away

Friday, February 10, 2012

Lloyd Morrison, board chairman of the HRL Morrison Music Trust and Promethean Editions Limited, passed away in Seattle today aged 54.

While Lloyd is widely known in the business and investment community, and for his efforts to generate debate about the New Zealand flag, he also supported the arts in New Zealand. In 1995 Lloyd established the HRL Morrison Music Trust to support New Zealand musicians of international calibre and in 1997 he established classical music publisher Promethean Editions Limited with business partner Ross Hendy.

Ross comments: "It is a sad day today to learn of the passing of Lloyd. Lloyd was an accomplished business luminary, had a wicked sense of dress and style, and above all, always had an extremely positive frame of mind. His positivity was infectious. He was also a very generous supporter of the arts. He invested in composers and musicians in order to build a sustainable platform for the arts in New Zealand. I was introduced to Lloyd by my friend and composer Gareth Farr. When I first had the idea to form a music publishing company in 1996, Gareth told me that I had to meet with Lloyd. I am so pleased that I followed his advice."

Today, Promethean Editions works with over 30 composers in Australia, Canada and New Zealand and has published over 100 sheet music publications. The HRL Morrison Music Trust has released over 70 classical recordings featuring New Zealand composers and musicians.

NZ Listener arts columnist Rod Biss writes: "[Lloyd's] death is a great loss to us all - by us, I mean New Zealand. We really needed people like him who knew the value of things, rather than the cost of them."
