Biography

The Turnovsky Trio was this country’s first all New Zealand-born and educated full-time professional chamber music ensemble.

Founded in 1991 by Sam Konise (vln), Christopher Kane (vcl) and Eugene Albulescu (pno), the Trio immediately attracted critical acclamation for performances nationally and internationally. They competed in 1995 in the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, and were placed fourth in the world. They were also one of only sixteen groups selected from around the world to be invited to the highly prestigious ARD International Chamber Music Competition in Munich in 1998.

The Trio performed throughout the country for Chamber Music New Zealand and regularly performed special school programmes and commissioned new works by New Zealand composers. In 1998 the Trio gained residency at the University of Waikato, and Sam Konise was joined by Ashley Brown (vcl) and Catherine McKay (pno).

The Turnovsky Trio was named after the late Fred Turnovsky, a Wellington industrialist and generous patron of the arts, particularly chamber music. The Turnovsky Trust played an integral role in supporting the group.
