Biography

Strike is a high-energy drumming group whose flexible line-up is drawn from amongst New Zealand's most outstanding percussionists. Founded in 1993, Strike began as a classically trained percussion ensemble and has evolved and incorporated influences from a large range of different genres. Strike comprises a core group of performers including founders Murray Hickman and Tim Whitta, Tom Pierard and Leni Sulusi. They are joined on occasion by additional performers including Takumi Motokawa, Erynne Gleeson and Steve Bremner.

Pacific, classical and contemporary musical influences, combined with a movement and theatre-based presentation, make Strike unique in the world of percussion music. The ensemble has ventured into exploration of the theatrical and physical aspects of percussion, leading to the development of a movement-based, choreographed show, Cube, which was premiered at the 1999 Melbourne International Festival of the Arts, and later seen at the New Zealand Festival in 2000.

Following the critically-acclaimed season of Gareth Farr's ballet score for Smashing Sweet Vixen with the Royal New Zealand Ballet in 1998, Strike gained a greater profile at home and overseas. On the stage, in arts festivals, street events, and at corporate events Strike has created its own "classical crossover" audience extending their understanding of percussive-based music and movement.

Strike are a leading exponent of New Zealand's classical percussion ensemble repertoire. They have commissioned and premiered works from many of New Zealand's foremost composers, including Gareth Farr, David Downes, Don McGlashan, Ross Harris and Miriama Young.

Strike premiered Farr's Percussion Concerto in the Celebrate Wellington Town Hall series in 2005. They have appeared as soloists with the NZSO Chamber Orchestra, the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Vector Wellington Orchestra, and recorded with the NZSO Chamber Orchestra.
