Biography

Diedre Irons was born in Winnipeg, Canada. A child prodigy, she made her first solo appearance with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra at the age of twelve playing Schumann's Piano Concerto, and officially debuted with the orchestra at age eighteen, playing Stravinsky’s Concerto for Piano and Winds. After graduating from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, she was invited by her teacher, Rudolf Serkin, to join the faculty of that prestigious conservatory. She taught there for the next seven years, at the same time touring extensively in Canada and the United States both as a soloist and as a chamber music player. Irons avoided the international competition circuit, believing the aims of competing to conflict with those of music.

Irons moved to New Zealand in 1977 and has since become a vital part of the country's music scene, performing frequently with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Auckland Philharmonia and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. She has toured many times under the auspices of Chamber Music New Zealand, and recorded extensively for Radio New Zealand. She continues to travel internationally, having to date performed concerts in 25 countries.

Major collaborations have included performance of the complete piano trio works of Beethoven with the Canterbury Trio, the complete works of Brahms for piano and strings and Shostakovich’s complete works for piano and strings. In 2003/4 she performed all five Beethoven piano concertos with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra under Marc Taddei.

Irons was awarded an MBE for services to music in 1989, and in 2007 she was awarded the degree of Doctor of Music (honoris causa) from Brandon University in Manitoba, Canada ‘in recognition of outstanding contributions in the world of music through superlative achievement as a talented, dedicated and passionate pianist.’ Irons is the Head of Piano Studies at the New Zealand School of Music, a role she has held since 2004.
