Biography

Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir was formed in 1998 by the New Zealand Youth Choir Board, with Dr Karen Grylls as its first and only Artistic Director.  As a nationally selected choir of the highest caliber, Voices, which includes some former members of the New Zealand Youth Choir, provides a chamber choir, flexible in size, and capable of performing a wide repertoire.

The choir made its début at the 1998 New Zealand International Arts Festival in a recital with the NZCO and Keith Lewis, and then later in the year won gold and silver awards at the Tolosa International Choral Competition in the Basque region of Spain. In March 1999, they performed the Fauré Requiem and Poulenc’s Gloria with the NZSO, and in 2000 they appeared at the New Zealand International Arts Festival in a solo recital and with the NZSO in Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice. Their participation in the International Chamber Music Festival led to collaboration with the prestigious Aradia Ensemble from Canada, resulting in the completion of a world premiere recording of the Vanhal Masses.

The choir has performed in numerous festivals and international competitions, including the New Zealand International Arts Festival (2002, 2008 and 2010), Otago Festival of the Arts (2004), Taranaki Arts Festival (2007), Taupo Arts Festival (2008) and the 9th International Chamber Choir Competition (Marktoberdorf, Germany, 2005). In 2006, their Trust Records album Spirit of the Land (MMT2065) won Best Classical Album at the RIANZ New Zealand Music Awards.

A landmark performance for the choir was performing Mahler Symphony No 8 alongside the NZSO and soloists at the NZ International Arts Festival in Wellington under the baton of Vladimir Ashkenazy in 2010.
